Meet the Swiss Federal Council 2017

The release of the Swiss Federal Council's official photo for 2017 on New Year’s Eve caused quite a stir in the media, even becoming a trending topic on twitter. Creative minds were quick to publish inventive versions of the original portraits taken by photographer Beat Mumenthaler.

The original version

An adapted "nice" version

The Swiss government comprises seven members to form the Federal Council. The president is elected for a one-year term of office and is regarded during that time as ‘Primus inter pares’, or first among equals.

The Swiss Government has revamped its official website where you can find information about the Swiss Government and a restricted amount of news in English. Personally, I do think this year's photo is a great deal more stylish than in past years. So let's look at the bright side, the Swiss Federal Council are definitely making an effort.

Someone decided to adapt the official photo into a video showing the Federal Council singing ‘Bernhemian Rhapsody’. See the result for yourself:

Made me smile today...

Audrey's back... as a chocoholic!

The Breakfast At Tiffany’s star has been brought back to life with CGI technology for Galaxy's latest ice cream advert which is set in the 1950s on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. It's amazing to see how far we've come with computer generated photography and film.

This definitely made me smile today.

Have a great weekend, hopefully with lots of ice cream!

Fun with the Swiss

Craig Ferguson is a Scottish-born American television host, stand-up comedian, writer, actor, director, producer and voice artist. He was the host of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, that aired on CBS from 2005 to 2014.

The format (talk show with lots of background laughing) is rather American but the sense of humour is definitely British. Not to be taken too seriously, this video is a wee bit wacky but might make you smile and allow for a humorous five minutes over the holidays.

30 Things You Didn't Know About Queen Elizabeth II

There's a lot more to Her Majesty than her colourful suits and flowery hats.

2. Queen Elizabeth has received over 3.5 million items of correspondence over the length of her reign.

3. She speaks fluent French.

4. In 2005, the Queen claimed ownership of 88 cygnets, or young swans, on the River Thames. The swans are now looked over by a royal swan keeper.

5. She joined Facebook in 2010, through a page called The British Monarchy. It is not possible to poke her. She joined Twitter in 2009; a social media team at Buckingham Palace sends daily tweets.

6. Queen Elizabeth was the first British monarch to celebrate her diamond wedding anniversary.

7. She is the only person in Britain who can drive without a license plate on her car.

8. She has visited Australia 16 times.

9. She has received a variety of live animals — jaguars and sloths from Brazil and black beavers from Canada — as gifts. They are now in the care of the London Zoo.

Julia Roberts has a message for you!

When Mother Nature speaks using her natural forces, humans usually only respond after the fact. Rather than work harder to prevent flooding caused by global warming, we organize relief efforts to rebuild entire communities washed away by hurricane. Instead of passing laws for stronger offshore oil drilling regulations, we use dishwashing detergent to clean off soiled shorebirds.

Well, the creators of the video below are hoping that since we don't listen to the way earth's natural forces beg for change, we might listen to the personified voice of Mother Nature. Of course, the effect of her voice is heightened when it's actually Julia Roberts.

Julia Roberts, Harrison Ford, Kevin Spacey, Edward Norton, Penélope Cruz, Robert Redford and Ian Somerhalder all join forces to give nature a voice. Watch the films and take action at www.natureisspeaking.org

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution 2015

In line with yesterday's post about Neapolitan cooking, today I am posting a video that has been making the rounds on the net. Yes, it's him! He's back: Jamie Oliver. This time with a new petition called "Food Revolution Day"!

Can you imagine what he is up to!?!

Well, he urgently needs your help to make a real difference. We are currently facing a global obesity epidemic, with 42 million children under the age of five either overweight or obese across the world. The bottom line is the next generation will live shorter lives than their parents if nothing is done to rectify these alarming stats.

So Jamie is asking that you do two simple things – first, please sign this petition to show your support for compulsory practical food education in schools across the world, then, most importantly, share it via your social networks.

The utterly brilliant Ed Sheeran has written us a Food Revolution Day song! Incredibly talented artists on the music track include Sir Paul McCartney, Alesha Dixon, Jazzie B, Professor Green, Jamie Cullum, George The Poet, Us The Duo, Che'nelle, DJ MK, Mr Hudson, The London Youth Choir and Hugh Jackman!

Over a million people have joined our Food Revolution, to try and make sure every child gets the basic skills they need to lead healthier, happier lives through food education in schools.

Nelson Mandela's legacy

While the world is paying tribute to Nelson Mandela today, it seems to me that all the dignitaries whom have turned up at the stadium of Johannesburg are absolutely starstruck themselves.

Despite the pouring rain - which it seems is a good fortune in the tradition of Mandiba's tribe -  crowds are clapping, singing and dancing as they arrive at the FNB stadium. A most colourful stadium I might add.

On another level, I will be watching the movie "The 16th Man" with my children this weekend. "The 16th Man" is a documentary about the South African rugby team and how it helped Nelson Mandela write history in 1995, the year the “Springboks” hosted and won the Rugby World Cup. It is about the courage, the will power, the patience, the willingness to accept, the chance to change and about the determination of a man and his country to abolish old rules and accept the challenge.

“The 16th Man” is DEFINATELY worth watching. Absolutely speechless to what a nation with the right leader is capable of through sports. Never in our wildest dreams......

A US Ambassador's love for politics

Curious to hear from the US Ambassador in person? This is your chance. The Franklin College has invited the Ambassador of the United States of America to Switzerland to their Spring 2013 Lecture Series. The Honorable Donald S. Beyer, Jr. will inspire new perspectives and challenge previous opinions in his speech entitled "Why I love politics".

Ambassador Beyer was sworn in as the United States Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein on August 5, 2009. A nationally recognized political, business and philanthropic leader, he built up a strong reputation in Virginia over 30 years. In addition to spending eight years as Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, in 2008 he chaired the Transportation and Land Use working group of the Governor’s Virginia Commission on Climate Change. Before his nomination as Ambassador, he was asked by President-elect Barack Obama to lead the United States Department of Commerce Transition Team. Drawing on his personal involvement and experiences over many years, Ambassador Beyer will share with us his fascination with the challenging world of politics.

After the lecture there will be a small reception where the audience can meet the speaker and discuss the evening’s topic. The lecture is free of charge and open to the public.

Venue: Spring lecture by the Ambassador of the United States of America

Think PiNk

I am seriously wondering how I have never come across this song? "Think Pink" was featured in the American musical film "Funny Face" starring Audrey Hepburn released in 1957, with assorted songs by George and Ira Gershwin.

I am a PiNk lover - in case you hadn't noticed - I will buy anything pink if you put me to the test. My friends can vouch for that. From pink shoes and handbags to pink phones and cameras, pink skioutfit, pink sunglasses and earrings, pink PJ's, pink tennis racket AND golf clubs, just to name a few.

I LOVE PINK!

Celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee

It's a complicated story. Where do we come from? Without explaining any further I'd just say: Don't forget your roots, no matter how many you have. Celebrate them all. Therefore I will be honoring a unique occasion thinking of my British heritage this weekend:

The Jubilee weekend is at last upon us, the queen celebrates 60 years as Monarch in 2012.

On Sunday 3 June an immense party will unfold across the United Kingdom as thousands of street parties are held in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. But the grandest table of all will be in Piccadilly, where people will gather from all over the land for a single extraordinary party, right in the heart of London.

For the first time in its history, Piccadilly will be closed to traffic and decked out in bunting, bringing the spirit of the traditional English summer fête to the centre of London. There will be entertainments – craft stalls, fairground rides, vintage cars, brass bands, tea dances and much more – and a 500-seat table will be set up along the length of Piccadilly, where guests can enjoy a homemade picnic or buy food from the many stalls and shops that will line the street.

If you are planning to have a Jubilee get-together this weekend and need some bunting and partyware then look no further! Hurry and order everything you need at britshop based near Zug.

Following is a recipe from The Baking Book to make with your kids for this special occasion : http://www.dk.co.uk/static/html/features/thingstodo/recipes/JubileeCupcakes.pdf

Introducing Whitney Houston to my daughter

How many times have I listened to "How will I know"?
How many hours did I dance to "I Wanna Dance With Somebody"?
How many tears lost over boys listening to "Saving All My Love For You"?
How many hopes flying high with "Greatest Love of All"?
How many lost loves accompanied by "Didin't We Almost Have It all"?
How many times did the beat get going with "I'm Every Woman"?
How many chills went down my spin when I listen to "Exhale"?
How many dreams were about me having a voice like Whitney Houston?

Call me a hopeless romantic, because I am, but Whitney had a song for every moment in my life. Whitney Houston released her debut album, "Whitney Houston," in February 1985 to wide acclaim. Rolling Stone magazine called her "one of the most exciting new voices in years". I was 18 when I first heard her voice. She accompanied me through my ups and downs at boarding school - and believe me there where many!!!! Until this day she remains my favourite singer of all times.

Daughter of the great soul-and-gospel vocalist Cissy Houston, cousin to both Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick and goddaughter to Aretha Franklin, Houston's family background seemed a magically appropriate fusion of both the grit and the glamour of late-20th-century African-American pop music. She was a pop phenomenon capable of breaching all manner of audience boundaries whether of race, age or geographic origin. You couldn't find a more auspicious template for great expectations. And she delivred time after time until yesterday....

Today I shared all her greatest hits with my 8-year old daughter. She now will carry on dancing to Whitney's songs, just like I did!

Ice is too thin..

The ice covering Lake St. Moritz is too thin. Now for most people this is not big news, however, for the rich and famous VIPs and for the Polo lovers of this world, it's like not celebrating Christmas.

The St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow is the world’s most prestigious winter polo tournament. Four high-goal teams battle for the coveted Trophy on the frozen surface of Lake St. Moritz. The unusual conditions on snow, the unaccustomed location at 1,800 metres above sea level and the cosmopolitan character of St. Moritz make the tournament truly unique – as attested by approximately 15,000 spectators from every corner of the world who make the pilgrimage to Lake St. Moritz at the end of January each year.

The St. Moritz Lake Commission, however, has decided not to grant clearance for erection of the infrastructure on the surface of the lake due to a too thinner ice layer. The risk of the ice collapsing is too great. For the first time in the tournament’s 28-year history, the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow has had to be cancelled due to the weather conditions.

After various load-bearing-capacity tests on the iced-over surface of Lake St. Moritz, the safety experts reached the conclusion yesterday that, for safety reasons, they cannot grant clearance for erection of the necessary tournament infrastructure on the surface of the lake. The regulations on the use of the surface ice are strict: the ice across the whole lake must be no thinner than 20 centimetres. Each square metre must be able to bear up to 350 kilograms. If these requirements are not met, no structures can be erected on the lake. “We were hoping for a last-minute change in the weather so that a few nights at sub-zero temperatures could freeze the lake sufficiently. Unfortunately Mother Nature has let us down,” comments Bernhard Pöllinger, Head of Sports & Infrastructure at St. Moritz Polo Corporation.

Well, you can still enjoy the Gourmet Festival that begins on Monday, January 30th, 2012 or how about just luxuriating in the beauty of St.Moritz's nature? No one can cancel that!!!

Dreaming of Necker Island

"My home - and favourite hideaway!"
Sir Richard Branson

Earlier this week I wrote about Luxury Home swapping, well here is another swanky idea. Why not rent an entire island from Mr.Branson himself?

Necker Island is a small island in the British Virgin Islands. All of the land on the island is owned by Sir Richard Branson, famous for his Virgin brand, you know ranging from mobile telephony to transportation, travel, financial services, media, music and fitness. The entire island operates like a resort and can be rented. What a bargain!

The island was named after the 17th century Dutch squadron commander Johannes de Neckere, although it remained uninhabited until the late 20th century.

When Branson bought the 74-acre (300,000 m2) island for £180,000 in 1979, it was uninhabited. He purchased the island at the age of 28, just six years after starting Virgin Group. It took 3 years and approximately US$10 million to turn it into a private island retreat.

Using local stone, Brazilian hardwoods, antiques, art pieces and fabrics and bamboo furniture from Bali the architects and designers created a 10 bedroom Balinese-style villa crowning a hill above the beach.

Each of the 10 bedrooms has open walls giving a 360-degree view and cooling winds from any direction in the house. The island has accommodation for 28 people and rents out at US$53,000 to $54,000 a day. All that includes two private beaches, private pools, tennis courts, breathtaking views, a personal chef, a team of about 60 staff and a wide array of water sports equipment.

There are plenty of places to lie on the beach and enjoy the sea. Main Beach is where most of the water activities are based and where you will find the Tennis and Beach Pavilion. Turtle Beach is a more peaceful palm-fringed beach, with hammocks hanging between the trees and an aqua-trampoline anchored to the sea floor. There are many other places where guests can find a peaceful spot to relax and the more energetic can take the 2-hour walk around the island to view the flora and fauna.

So what are you waiting for? Check out Necker island and let yourself be lifted away into sweet dreamland: www.neckerisland.virgin.com.

Amy Winehouse - a lost talent

“Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live.”
Norman Cousins, American Essayist 1912-1990

Newsweek magazine called her "a perfect storm of sex kitten, raw talent and poor impulse control" back in 2008.

Last night she was scheduled to appear at the Nyon Paleo Summer Festival 2011 but the date was cancelled due to health problems, after her recent Belgrade performance when she appeared to be drunk on stage.

Amy Winehouse's tragically short life was fraught with personal issues, but her immense talent was undeniable. Amy Winehouse was just 27 years old as were all these other (in-)famous artists when they died, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Brian Jones.

It is extremely sad that she was never able to find peace whilst alive with her talent or success.  She led a rollercoaster life style that was destined to end in tragedy but she will live on in music history.

Celebrating Nelson Mandela Day

It amazes and delights me that it was my son who reminded me, that today was Nelson Mandela Day. My son was born 11 years ago, after Apartheid, after Mandela's liberation from prison, after Madiba served as President for the same country which had put him behind bars for 27 years.

During last year's Football World Cup - hosted by South Africa - I insisted in enlightening my kids about South Africa's history, Apartheid and the role of Nelson Mandela and Rev. Desmond Tutu. Yes, that would be the Archbishop who was wearing a yellow t-shirt and was dancing with the yellow and black Bafana banner wrapped around him.

Well, all that lecturing seems to have paid off. So, why not take the time today to talk to your kids about South Africa, Apartheid and Nelson Mandela.

Under South Africa's apartheid regime, Mandela spent 27 years in prison after being convicted of sabotage and attempts to overthrow the government. He was released in 1990 and became president in 1994.

Since 2009, the former South African president's birthday has been designated "Nelson Mandela International Day."

But July 18 isn't a National holiday. Supported by the United Nations, it's a day of public service, on which people are encouraged to spend at least 67 minutes doing some kind of community service in honor of the 67 years Mandela spent fighting for social justice. It is a call to action for people everywhere to take responsibility for making the world a better place, one small step at a time, just as Nelson Mandela did.

"Together, the best way we can thank Nelson Mandela for his work is by taking action for others and inspiring change," U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said last week.

Mandela is now too frail for public appearances, battling the health problems that come with old age. But many in South Africa want to remind him, and others, that his sacrifices and his extraordinary life journey are not forgotten.

Where does Hugh Grant fit in with UK tabloid scandal?

“You start to think I'm not proud of my country anymore. This is not the democracy I thought I was proud of.”
Hugh Grant

Admittedly, I very rarely publish any political post but when I came across this video related to the Murdock tabloid scandal I couldn't help but think 'what an unusual twist to an outragous story?'. I hope it will provide you with an out-of-the-ordinary Sunday morning lecture.

The last edition of the News of the World hit stands Sunday morning, as Britain's best-selling newspaper shuts down in the face of a scandal over illegal eavesdropping and bribery that has outraged Britain and rattled the foundation of the nation's political establishment.

News of the World, the world's top-selling English-language newspaper, is owned by News International, which also owns the Sun, the Times and the Sunday Times in Britain. Murdoch's News Corps media empire also encompasses Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post and Harper Collins publishers.

Actor Hugh Grant, who has himself been the subject of intense tabloid attention, is now leading the charge for a public inquiry into “the whole culture of tabloid press” in the UK.

Following is an interview with CNN’s Richard Quest, a journalist who I personally think is brilliantly refreshing, dynamic and wacky in this modern, steril, perfect world of broadcasting.

Enjoy!

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" turns 50

Class, style, and charm, she had it all. Fifty years ago, a gorgeous, perfect Audrey Hepburn waltzed onto the big screen as the glamorous, flighty Holly Golighty in "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" and won, essentially, everyone’s hearts. Since then, women of all ages have coveted her timeless look and free-spirited, New York party-girl lifestyle.

Here are 10 things to love about Holly:

1. She strikes a mean pose. The 1961 film's famous poster, on which Audrey Hepburn poses with a long cigarette holder, was named number 18 on a list of the best movie posters of all time.

2. She knows what she likes. "I'm just crazy about Tiffany's!"

3. She's witty. "If I had her money, I'd be richer than she is."

4. She's unsentimental. Her pet cat is simply named "Cat".

5. But not that unsentimental. Who could fail to be moved when she desperately searches an alley in the rain for Cat whom, moments earlier, she had tossed unceremoniously out of a taxi?

6. She's stylish. The famous black dress worn by Hepburn in the opening scenes of the film was designed by Givenchy and sold for $807,000 in 2006.

7. She's looking forward to old age. "It's tacky to wear diamonds before you're 40; and even that's risky … they only look good on the really old girls … wrinkles and bones, white hair and diamonds. I can't wait."

8. She can sing. Moon River was written especially for Hepburn to perform in the film and won an Oscar for best original song.

9. She makes things happen. In 1961 Tiffany & Co opened their doors on a Sunday for the first time since the 19th century, so scenes could be shot.

10. She's a heartbreaker. Though at the end of the film Holly kisses Paul in the rain, in Capote's novel she leaves for Brazil, and – except for a few postcards – he never hears from her again.

In celebration for the 50th anniversary of this iconic film, Paramount Home Entertainment is releasing a Blu-ray version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Watch the exclusive trailer premiere:
