You say "tomato", I say "tomato"

It's often said that the biggest difference between a British accent and an American one is rhotacism; words in British English have a flat "r" sound, while in American English the sound is rolled.

Of course, this often isn't true, as accents within Britain and America vary so widely. New York and Boston accents, for example, have a flat "r" sound, while Cornish, Scottish and some West Midlands accents are among those in the British Isles to retain the rhotic "r".

So which is the most common English accent?

English is spoken worldwide by around 840 million people, and is the third most-spoken global language after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. It's the mother tongue of 335 million people, and a second language for a further 505 million. As most English speakers don't speak the language natively, that means the most common English accent in the world is probably what is known officially, if imprecisely, as "international English".

So for some Sunday entertainment I thought I'd share the song – “You say tomato, I say tomato” – which defines the major differences and in which we supposedly agree to call the whole thing off... being half American, half British this is the story of my life!

The world's most influential language

What makes a language influential? Is it one with the most speakers?

According to one group of scholars, including cognitive scientist and linguist Steven Pinker, whether or not a language is influential is less about that language itself, and more about how it connects to others.

To establish how languages are connected, the scholars looked at three forms of writing. If someone, a journalist for example, wants their story to go global, they will most likely print the story in their native language, as well as in those languages they think will have the biggest reach.

First, they looked at over 2.2 million book translations between 1979 and 2011, which were made in over 150 countries and more than a thousand languages. They then looked at which edits to Wikipedia were being done in more than one language, scanning 382 million edits in 238 languages by 2.5 million editors. Finally, they turned to Twitter, looking at 550 million tweets in 73 languages written by 17 million users – more than 10% of Twitter’s active user base.

If researching a global language network shows one thing, it's that English remains the number one most connected language in the world. After English, however, there was no single global network, but rather three sets of smaller networks around the world, linked together by languages that have had historical and colonial influence, such as French, Spanish, German, Russian, Portuguese and Chinese.

Do all Europeans speak a foreign language?

Everybody assumes that growing up in Switzerland you automatically speak more than one language. Well, the truth is 60% of Swiss use more than one language at least one a week BUT the second language is often English and not one of the four national languages.

So, what does the rest of Europe look like?

Fun with the Swiss

Craig Ferguson is a Scottish-born American television host, stand-up comedian, writer, actor, director, producer and voice artist. He was the host of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, that aired on CBS from 2005 to 2014.

The format (talk show with lots of background laughing) is rather American but the sense of humour is definitely British. Not to be taken too seriously, this video is a wee bit wacky but might make you smile and allow for a humorous five minutes over the holidays.

Raising bilingual children infogram

I love infograms and I am a strong supporter of bilingualism, trilingualism even quadrilingualism! (Never had to write that word before!?!)

This infographic from ULearn is aimed at increasing awareness on the benefits of raising bilingual children, and looks at some of the tried and tested methods used by many families. Improving language skills at any stage in life is always a good idea, wouldn't you agree?

Lugano's Book Nook is bidding farewell

It is sad news but inevitable. The Book Nook, Lugano's English Library is closing it doors after 17 years! Ticino's lending library and used bookseller in Viganello is in the process of liquidating their vast collection.

Heavy-heartedly I will say that it is an opportunity for you to pick up some books, DVDs or audio books for everyone in your family - at only CHF. 1.- a piece! Plan to stop by Tuesday December 18th from 14:00-16:00, Wednesday, December 19th from 14:00-16:00, Thursday, December 20th from 14:00-16:00 or Tuesday, December 23th from 14:00-16:00.

A special find of mine was "Enchanting Ticino"by Hanna & Juliusz Komarnicki. This unique book captures the nature, events and culture that surrounds us. It is a photographic journey of discovery illustrating the beauty of Ticino. The limited text is in English, and therefore makes a fabulous gift.

A big, big thank you to all the volunteers, helpers and sponsors over the years that made this lovely spot a little haven away from home for many of us English speakers in search for English books for our kids to read. The Book Nook was especially appreciated by its supporters before the arrival of Amazon & Co. when it was still a challenge to find a different Good Night story every week to read to our kids.

You will be dearly missed by your followers.

The parts of speech

Sitting here on a Sunday night with Expat daughter trying to explain the beauty of grammar, I am at a loss myself. Trying no to lose my cool, I googled and came across this is a little poem which I promptly fell in love with. What a fun way to better understand and remember the parts of speech? I wish they had used these kind of tools when I was a little girl.

Parts of Speech

by David B. Tower and Benjamin F. Tweed

A noun's the name of anything;
As: school or garden, hoop or swing.

Adjectives tell the kind of noun;
As: great, small, pretty, white, or brown.

Three of these words we often see,
Called articles - a, an, and the.

Instead of nouns the pronouns stand;
John's head, his face, my arm, your hand.

A pronoun replaces any noun
he, she, it, and you are found.

Verbs tell of something being done;
As: read, write, spell, sing, jump, or run.

How things are done the adverbs tell;
As, slowly, quickly, ill, or well.

They also tell us where and when;
As: here, and there, and now, and then.

A preposition stands before
A noun as: in, or through, a door.

Conjunctions sentences unite;
As: kittens scratch and puppies bite.

Conjunctions join the words together,
As: men and women, wind or weather.

The interjection shows surprise;
As: Oh, how pretty! Ah, how wise!

The whole are called the PARTS of SPEECH,
Which reading, writing and speaking teach.

From "Tit Chino" to "Shah Vow Zen"

Thousands of English-speaking expats are likely to remain tongue-tied with the pronunciation of the Swiss cantons. A new map now provides a remedy.

Twitter user Deedee has labelled all the Swiss cantons' names, with English syllables and words, for English speakers to be able to say the name correctly - more or less.

Where do you live? In Sung Gull Len! Basel-City is "bars Hellish indeed", Graubünden is called "Grow The Burn" and Neuchâtel is to "No Shat Tell".

John Wubbe, the president of Züri Expats is enthusiastic: "The map is awesome!" It is very difficult for most English-speaking expats to pronounce Swiss German words correctly. "Plus a different dialect is spoken in each place." Thaks to this map, the expats can learn the correct pronunciation of the cantons, says the Dutchman, who has lived in Switzerland for 14 years.

Try for yourself...
