9 Ways To Stay In Touch With Long-Distance Friends

One of my favrourite link lists is Swiss Miss' Friday link pack. Swissmiss is a design blog run by Swiss, long-term New York resident Tina Roth Eisenberg. She and her team are full of creative and out-of-the-ordinary ideas.

This video made me smile this morning, although No.9 might be taking it a little far.

The world is as big or as small as you make it

This is a video worth watching about a group of North Philadelphia local kids that gather at a rec centre to participate in an innovative program where they forge friendships with their peers across the world.

These students need to go through a metal detector every day at school. Despite a difficult environment they tell and listen to stories of the world that 10 years ago they wouldn't have had the opportunity to be exposed to.

This amazing bunch of kids are blessed with having an awesome mentor who wants to spread empathy and understanding by connecting teenagers. She decides to "retool" what the kids already have.

She guides them to ask real questions and learn about what separates them and what unites them. As they connect with kids from New York, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Paris and Kazakhstan, they discover that their worlds are not as different as they might think.

It's Neighbours' Day on May 20th

On May 20th, 2016 Switzerland joins the Neighbors' Day celebration. It is a very simple initiative that aims to promote a culture of solidarity within the neighbourhood to fight the typical isolation of today's contemporary lifestyle.

Celebrated on Friday May 20th 2016 by several million people in Europe, Neighbours' Day has enjoyed cross-continental success. This year, Neighbours Day is supported by more than 1 200 partners (city councils, housing organizations and local associations) in over 30 countries! The participants have reached 10 million!

Lugano joined this initiative in 2004 for the first time and over the years, citizens' actions have increased exponentially. To date, several hundred people participate with enthusiasm at this annual event. Founded 1999 in Paris by Mr.Atanase Périfan, the Neighbours' Day encountered an immediate success and has been growing ever since.

So why not organize an informal party and invite your neighbours! A simple gesture that can help strengthen the network of solidarity to overcome the distrust and the impoverishment of social relations.

The principle is straight forward: people of the same building or within the same neighbourhood gather on the evening of May 20th, to eat something together, have a drink, exchange a few words and get to know eachother better. An easy way to create solidarity or simply find opportunities to be together.

Three good reasons to join the party:
1. Get to know and appreciate your neighbour!
2. Unity is strength ... and makes life easier
3. A name, a face, a story...

Check your mailbox for the pre-printed invitation pack, click here or e-mail: vicini@lugano.ch or phone: Tel. 058 866 74 57.

You can also check out my Swiss neighbourhood rules before you embark on your adventure! Most importantly: don't forget to have fun! Remember the Swiss can be fun, just give them a chance. ;)

What it takes to make a home

What makes a spot feel like home? Is it because it's the place you live in, the local food you appreciate, the cultural traditions you enjoy, the location's natural beauty or does it just boil down to good friendship?

We have lived in many places and some have stuck with us more than others, to the point where the ones that have conquered a part of our hearts we still call home whereas the others we hardly ever talk about anymore.

Paris is officially our home but we also call Lugano and Madrid our home. Years ago I would have argued that one might be schizophrenic to so convincingly feel part of not just two but three communities. Today I know that not just my husband and I have created a strong bond to these places but the kids feel totally integrated in all three as well.

Of course, the fact that we regularly return to Lugano and Madrid renders the feeling of home easier. But the question remains: why do we so enjoy returning to "our homes"?

Yes, we love the local food and we travel back to Paris with our luggage full of goodies every time to cure our home sickness. Yes, we have adopted traditions from each country which we add to our rather eclectic yearly calendar of family celebrations. Yes, we do speak the local language and follow the who's who of the moment on regional TV and yes, we enjoy the natural beauty each location has to offer... but in the end...

... in the end...

... it is the human factor that makes all the difference.

Our homes resemble Grand Central Station the minute we arrive. Neighbours popping by to greet us, girl friends coming round for brunch, family friends inviting us for dinner, kids enjoying sleepovers, teenagers hanging out in the den listening to music, aquaintances catching up with us, custodians and gardeners happy to see us, the postman and the lady at the bakery intrigued by our lifestyle but appreciative of our loyalty.

Expat girl is convinced that even the cows down the road recognize her when she returns to Lugano!

It is the feeling of belonging that turns a place into a home. The consciousness of being appreciated and cherishing the good things in life such as true friendship. The demonstration of affection and the loyalty and respect that comes with it ... from both sides of the relationship.

This might sound like a cliché but I believe it is what ties us to our homes ... since ... how lonely and boring would a home be without the life and soul of human beings!

Fox Trail in Lugano

Have you heard of Fox Trail, the latest addition to Switzerland's many activities? Fox Trail consists of a thrilling paper chase organised across the country. The ingenious team event leads you to a city's most charming nooks and crannies or even to a castle's bizarre rooms on the Fox' various trails. Every course is different: decipher messages, interpret clues and coax secrets out of intricate puzzles.

Whether friends, family, acquaintances, company or club: Fox Trail makes for a group event that is rich in variety, and suits curious people between 8 and 88 years of age and it always has a new surprise up its sleeve.

It is not a race or an athletic feat, but a fun and elaborate group event, which lets you playfully discover a city with investigative skill, creativity and team work.

Ticino's trail is called Galileo Galilei where you'll search for the mysterious green treasure chest in the centre of Lugano. The trail leads you from the train station directly into the hills of the city but do not let yourself be too distracted by the breath-taking view, as there is still much to do: knights have to be saved, old characters have to be deciphered or trails of blood pursued. Even an exclusive cableway will help you with the enigma! This extraordinary tour through Lugano ends in the city center and is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience.

Seek and book a trail right here: http://www.foxtrail.ch/en. The organisers will tell you all in an e-mail. Happy hunting!

Hello neighbour...

When was the last time you ran out of sugar and asked your neighbour for a favour? Personally, I hopped across the landing last year to ask mine for a bottle opener. She looked very confused and surprised but handed me one nevertheless.

Pumpipumpe is a Switzerland-based project that is encouraging residents to place stickers on their mailbox to denote the goods they’re willing to lend to their neighbours.

The idea was initially formed to enable those with bike pumps to indicate to fellow cyclists that they could knock and use theirs in the case of a flat tyre — hence the name Pumpipumpe (lending pumps).

The scheme has since expanded into a system allow neighbours to advertise any object available to borrow.

Those who want to take part can simply order a pack of stickers from the project’s website. Each sticker is a small blue square that features illustrations including a bike pump, lawn mower, kitchen scale, children’s toys, and even internet access and fancy dress costumes.

The idea is that homeowners place the stickers for the items they have on their mailbox so passersby can know if they’re good to knock on the door. The stickers are free to anyone in Switzerland or Germany.

Could this idea work in your part of the world?

Missing family and friends abroad?

This is your opportunity: tell SWISS your story. Why?

Every day, SWISS flies people all over the world. And some of them stay abroad forever. Family and friends often live thousands of miles apart and don’t get the chance to see each other in person. The airline of Switzerland would like to bring these people back together. They are giving away 300 tickets.

So tell them your story, and let them know who you’d love to be reunited with. You can even upload a video or some photos to persuade the judges and website visitors to vote for you.

All the documents, photos and videos submitted will be studied by a judging panel. The panel will then select what they feel are the most moving stories, and the winners will be listed at swiss.com/for-switzerland.

If you can get 50 friends or more to vote for your story, you’ll earn an additional one-off panel vote. And all the people who have voted for you will also have the chance to win one of three pairs of tickets to a SWISS destination within Europe.

Beware: only those residing in Switzerland are permitted to take part in the competition. Any entry must be submitted by family members living in Switzerland.

The closing date is Sunday, 6th October 2013 at 24:00.

So, go ahead, tell SWISS your story here: http://www.seatsforswitzerland.com/#!/en/join/

When we were young....

“A friend is one who believes in you when you have ceased to believe in yourself.”
Unknown

I am not sure if today's youth would still go through such trouble as to head south on a moped to spend a weekend in the Ticino but this video certainly made me smile.

I actually remember friends taking off from Zurich heading towards the sunshine over the Gotthard pass on their motorcycles. It was the early 80's. We were rebels supporting Radio 24, the first "free radio" which was broadcasting illegally from Monte Ceneri and Zürich's youngster were their biggest fan group.

Are their any other vintage Radio 24 fans out there?

A little thought about friendship

"It is not so much our friends' help that helps us as the confident knowledge that they will help us."
Epicurus (341 - 270 BC) Greek philosopher.

What is frienship based on? Last night was proof to me once again that it doesn't matter how often you see a person - or how rarely in the case of many expats who have their friends scattered across the world - if you make a minimum effort to keep in touch, you will be rewarded with loyal friends, interesting conversations and memories of fun moments shared in the present and in the past. You also know that you'll be able to count on them in the future. The secret is to chose your friends carefully. Whom do you really trust?

What is really boils down to is: Who makes you smile and who can you trust? Unconditional and honest friendship by people who will give you their upright opinion and support you in your dreams and in your projects. Who in return you will provide with reliable encouragement and heartfelt understanding.
