Swiss hospitality at its best

This weekend brought us back to Switzerland... yet again... for Expat boy needs to make his first grown-up life-changing decision. Where to go after the International Baccalaureate?

To be perfectly honest he is his father's son, total strategic focus albeit sometimes absent-mined when not interested. His two passions: football and hospitality.

For years he has known that his goal was to study Hotel Management in Switzerland, I figured it might be a good idea if he actually visited the campus and surveyed the groundbreaking training in action.

Arriving in Lausanne on a spectacular sunny day with blue skies and gorgeous views across the Lake Leman, we were blown away by the atmosphere, professionalism, efficiency, cleanliness, organization, beauty and of course hospitality of Swiss Higher Education.

The visits to two different institutes provided an opportunity to personally discover the professionalism and excellence the Swiss hospitality training is world-renowned for. Admissions officers, teaching staff and student ambassadors did an outstanding job in demonstrating what Swiss education stands for and how it successfully prepares students for a wide variety of hospitality management careers across the globe.

So much so, that my husband has now decided he wants to go back to study!

Sweet memories of Parco Ciani

Today would have been an ideal today for a stroll through Parco Ciani .... in my mind! I am stitting in drizzly, rainy Paris and wondering when I will next spot the sunshine. My kids refuse to visit yet another museum and my hubby (exceptionally) had to work this weekend.

So, as my mind drifts back to the lake of Lugano, I imagine myself taking a deep breath of fresh, crisp air that forebodes the snow! I close my eyes and .... see for yourself...

In 1912, the Parco Ciani estate was bought by the city of Lugano for more than 1.5 million francs. Professor Angelo Pizzorno made this comment in Consiglio Comunale (council meeting) :"This is not crazy pointless luxury; it is a shrewd investment by a city whose moral and economic standing is due in great part to the assets of its natural beauty."

For me this 63,000 square metre park constitutes the city’s green lung where I can recover from the hustle and bustle of everyday life as I walk along paths lined by magnificent centuries-old trees. And when the sun shines .... it is pure luxury!

Dior on a mission

Forget 007, Dior 001 is where it’s at for the lady on the hunt.

In continuation with this week's previous posts about luxury living I have stumbled across a most exquisite girl's gadget. So keep reading on.....

There's so many choices for you to store your cosmetic items, most women use the special cosmetic bags to store all of their personal cosmetic items, now there's a cool amazing item called Cosmetic Gun to store all of your beauty items. The idea of making a Handgun as Cosmetics storage comes from Ted Norton a Dutch Jewelry Designer.

Amsterdam-based Ted Noten designed a weapon of beauty titled Dior 001. The gun is part of a larger new series entitled "7 Necessities for a Woman to Feel Like a Woman Through the Eyes of a Man" presented by Ornamentum Gallery on the occasion of Design Miami / Basel 2011.

Dior 001 discreetly hides lip-gloss, pills, an antique hairpin, a USB stick with "secret information," and a 100 gram sterling silver bar. The firearm is made from a 3D printed nylon body with 18 carat gold details executed through traditional goldsmithing methods.

And guess what? The gun comes in black as well. This time signed by Chanel. Chanel 001 gun conceals lip gloss, antique hairpin, gold toothpick, bottle of perfume, USB flash drive, medicine compartment, and a gold bar.

Pretty crazy for a make-up kit, isn't it? I know that’s all I need for a guaranteed good Saturday night.

Oh, I nearly forgot to mention the price: a cool US$ 11'500.- for the Dior 001 Cosmetic gun and a whooping US$ 17'000.- for the Canel 001 version. Maybe I can get James to buy it for me?!?

Dreaming of Necker Island

"My home - and favourite hideaway!"
Sir Richard Branson

Earlier this week I wrote about Luxury Home swapping, well here is another swanky idea. Why not rent an entire island from Mr.Branson himself?

Necker Island is a small island in the British Virgin Islands. All of the land on the island is owned by Sir Richard Branson, famous for his Virgin brand, you know ranging from mobile telephony to transportation, travel, financial services, media, music and fitness. The entire island operates like a resort and can be rented. What a bargain!

The island was named after the 17th century Dutch squadron commander Johannes de Neckere, although it remained uninhabited until the late 20th century.

When Branson bought the 74-acre (300,000 m2) island for £180,000 in 1979, it was uninhabited. He purchased the island at the age of 28, just six years after starting Virgin Group. It took 3 years and approximately US$10 million to turn it into a private island retreat.

Using local stone, Brazilian hardwoods, antiques, art pieces and fabrics and bamboo furniture from Bali the architects and designers created a 10 bedroom Balinese-style villa crowning a hill above the beach.

Each of the 10 bedrooms has open walls giving a 360-degree view and cooling winds from any direction in the house. The island has accommodation for 28 people and rents out at US$53,000 to $54,000 a day. All that includes two private beaches, private pools, tennis courts, breathtaking views, a personal chef, a team of about 60 staff and a wide array of water sports equipment.

There are plenty of places to lie on the beach and enjoy the sea. Main Beach is where most of the water activities are based and where you will find the Tennis and Beach Pavilion. Turtle Beach is a more peaceful palm-fringed beach, with hammocks hanging between the trees and an aqua-trampoline anchored to the sea floor. There are many other places where guests can find a peaceful spot to relax and the more energetic can take the 2-hour walk around the island to view the flora and fauna.

So what are you waiting for? Check out Necker island and let yourself be lifted away into sweet dreamland: www.neckerisland.virgin.com.

Sky Park Singapore - an engineering wonder

“Don't tell me the sky is the limit, there are footprints on the moon!”

Last summer the most extraordinary structure was inaugurated in Singapore. I came across these photos the other day and I now have yet another reason to travel to that part of the world. Sands "Sky Park" is "suspended" at 200-meter height ontop of three skyscrapers, as if on pillars and is considered a new wonder of the world.

Marina Bay Sands is an integrated resort fronting Marina Bay in Singapore. Developed by Las Vegas Sands, it is billed as the world's most expensive standalone casino property at S$8 billion, including cost of the prime land.

Stretching longer than the Eiffel tower laid down or four and a half A380 Jumbo Jets, with an impressive 12,400 square meters of space, the Sands SkyPark can host up to 3900 people. At 57-stories high, the gravity-defying cantilever is one of the largest of its kind in the world. From this privileged observation deck, hundreds of visitors at a time can feast their eyes on the unforgettable panorama view of Singapore or play in a casino, bars, restaurants, the largest outdoor swimming pool at that height — an infinity pool 150 meters long, and a Museum of Modern Art. The designer or architect of the project is Moshe Safdie architects. The engineers were from Arup & Parsons Brinkerhoff.

Sands Sky Park marks Asia's most spectacular business and leisure destination with over 2,500 rooms & suites and state-of-the-art convention and exhibition facilities, theaters, world-class casino, entertainment and the best shopping and dining in Singapore.

Off you go.... go have some fun....... even if only in your imagination ;)

Outlet shopping in Switzerland: Foxtown

So, yesterday I took my little self off shopping down the road to Mendrisio (15km south of Lugano) to have a stroll through Europe's biggest outlet mall. A stroll is mildly put. Foxtown is a hangar housing 3 km of shop windows with over 160 stores, a casino, several bars and restaurants plus a generous amount of visitor parking.

The Foxtown centre boasts of having prestigious brands at factory prices, and stores in the complex include Gucci, D&G, Armani, Diesel, Calvin Klein, Boss, Gant, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Diesel, Esprit, Adidas, Nike, Replay, Superga, Samsonite, Fratelli Rossetti, Brums, La Perla, Fendi, Tod's, Hogan, Versace and Valentino. In these retail spaces, over 250 top Italian and International brands offer their products at factory prices directly to the customer, with a discount from 30% to 70%.

Personally I like shopping for household goods and sports equipment. Bed Linen, kitchen gadgets, gym shoes and the kids sport's gear all get acquired at a healthy discount. The quality is guaranteed by the brand itself. Trust me you CANNOT resist the temptation of shopping. You can go absolutely wild when the sales are on in July and January.

The best part of it all is that the shopping mall is open 7 days a week from 11.00 to 19.00. Click here for more info!

My personal favourites:
Villeroy & Boch (Store No: 220),  La Casa Italiana (Store No: 248), Ferrari (Store No: 160), Ralph Lauren (Store No: 108), Nike (Store No: 111),  Gucci (Store No. 209), Tod's (Store No: 309), Petit Bateau (Store No. 223).

The Karl Lagerfeld chocolate hotel room

"If chocolate is the answer, the question is irrelevant."

I came across this photo last week and just couldn't resist sharing this piece of information with my readers. I am a serious chocoholic and always have been. Growing up in Switzerland only fueled my craving. NOTHING beats Swiss chocolate except Belgian pralines!!!

Karl Lagerfeld latest creative venture is a hotel room entirely made from chocolate. The eccentric designer teamed up with Magnum ice cream and chocolatier Patrick Roger to create a chocolate hotel suite at La Reserve in Paris to celebrate the launch of Magnum Ecuador and Ghana ice creams, which are made with specially selected cocoa beans sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in Ecuador and Ghana.

The whole suite is made from chocolate, including its carpet, headboard, book-filled nightstand and occupant — Lagerfeld’s companion and muse Baptiste Giabiconi, who is depicted eating a Magnum ice cream bar. The Karl Lagerfeld chocolate hotel room was created with 1.5 tons of chocolate, according to WWD. Head to WWD to read the magazine’s full interview with Karl Lagerfeld about his current projects and the chocolate hotel room.

Speaking about the hotel suite, Karl said: "It has been an absolute pleasure to design the Magnum Chocolate Suite. My idea was to flirt with a mix of modern and traditional French influences to create something remarkable."

Had this been my job there wouldn't have been much left to show!!!

Discover the universe of Miss Dior Chérie

“My mother says that when I was little my grandfather used to take me and my cousins on one side after dinner and ask us what we wanted to be when he grew up, and I’d say ‘Christian Dior’,” recalled the French fashion designer Christian Lacroix.” He was so famous in France at the time. It seemed as if he wasn’t a man, but an institution.”

Christian Dior, son of a wealthy Norman manufacturer of chemicals and fertilizer, wanted to be an architect, but his family insisted he enter the diplomatic service. He prepared for a diplomatic career at the Ecole des Sciences Politiques but abandoned diplomacy in 1928 and became an art dealer. Illness forced him to give up that business in 1934, and when he returned to Paris a year later, it was as a fashion illustrator - first of hats, later of dresses.

In 1946, when World War II cloth rationing was lifted, Dior opened his own salon. In the spring of 1947 the success of his first collection, called the "New Look," propelled him to the top of the French fashion industry. His idealized, ultrafeminine silhouette featured tiny waists; long, full skirts; padded busts; and rounded shoulders. Everything was made exquisitely of the best materials available. The New Look changed the shape of women's clothing and lifted the French fashion industry out of the doldrums. For this feat a grateful French government awarded him the Legion of Honor.

His successive collections (including the "H-Line" in 1954 and the "A-Line" in 1955) continued to be popular, and throughout the 1950s the fashion world looked to Paris and Dior for inspiration and style. He expanded his company into eight firms and sixteen associate firms in twenty-four countries, reportedly grossing some $20 million a year. His Dior label went on jewelry, scarves, men's ties, furs, stockings, gloves, and ready-to-wear clothing.

Although Christian Dior died in 1957, he is perhaps one of the most famous fashion designers of both the 20th and 21st centuries. In the years after the debut of his first collection in 1947 he was a legendary figure and the world press developed an extraordinary love affair with him, increasing their enthusiasm with each new collection. Dior never disappointed them, constantly creating clothes that were newsworthy as well as beautiful.

After his death the House of Dior continued under other designers, including his protégé Yves St. Laurent until 1960, then Marc Bohan and the (in-famous) John Galliano.

The Fashion world now awaits his successor, Riccardo Tisci's first show with curiosity.

In the meantime, enter into the fragrance universe of Christian Dior. Watch the new commercial directed by Sofia Coppola and featuring Natalie Portman for the Christian Dior perfume, "Miss Dior Chérie", and listen to the famous French song “Je t’aime… moi non plus” by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg playing in the background.

Open the various boxes by pulling the ribbon and let yourself be drifted away into a sweet world full of luxury.

Milano's Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2011

Milan has long been regarded as one of the international capitals of industrial and modern design, as well as one of the world’s most influential cities in fashion. The host of FieraMilano, Salone del Mobile and Milan Fashion Week, and the home of Teatro alla Scala and the iconic Milan Cathedral, the Milan’s steeped history in design makes it one of the most important hubs of creativity in the world.

Despite its common label as a furniture fair, Salone Internazionale del Mobile has become much more: most importantly, it has become a key event in the luxury calendar where furniture manufacturers and luxury brands look to showcase their creativity and innovation, and where the world’s most influential designers, journalists and professionals converge to discuss and analyse the latest technologies, materials and trends.
