In March, the First Lady Michelle Obama launched Let Girls Learn to address the range of challenges preventing adolescent girls across the globe from attaining a quality education that empowers them to reach their full potential.
Let Girls Learn employs a holistic approach to change the perception of the value of girls at the individual, community and institutional levels; fostering an enabling environment for adolescent girls’ education; and engaging and equipping girls to make life decisions and important contributions to society.
But Michelle Obama did not stop there, she enlisted a major girl squad to sing the power anthem "This Is For My Girls." The song, which was inspired by the Let Girls Learn initiative and the 62 million girls around the world who do not have access to education, features Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliott, Jangle Monáe, Kelly Rowland, Zendaya, Lea Michele, Chloe x Halle, and Jadagrace.
While the First Lady is not featured on "This Is For My Girls," it was a natural fit for her to join James Corden for a Carpool Karaoke segment to sing the song and celebrate the power of musical activism.
Now, I don't know about you, but my vote definitely goes to the current first lady!

Yodel like a Swiss
So, have you ever wondered what a REAL yodel sounds like?
Yodeling, a vocal technique that involves a variety of drawn-out pitches formed in the head and chest registers, was the perfect way to bring cows together in what sheepherders called kuhreihen, or "line of cows". The earliest record of the distinctive call was written in 1545 in Appenzell, a region in northeastern Switzerland.
Many listeners don't realize that those prolonged oooooohs and uuuuuuuuhs usually tell a story, often about nature, love, or folk tales that link back to Switzerland. Lyrics to these “yodel songs” are typically in French or Swiss German.

Kiss me Kate in Lugano
Still wondering what to do tonight? Or tomorrow night? Or Sunday?
Don't miss a bunch of talented kids performing this weekend at TASIS. The high school drama students are performing on of my favourite plays: Kiss me Kate!
Kiss Me, Kate is a broadly comic story of a theatrical troupe mounting a new musical based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Love triangles, gambling debts, and mistaken identities abound in this quintessential backstage show, last performed at TASIS in 2007.
Composed by Cole Porter and written by Bella and Sam Spewack, the show features what many consider to be Porter’s finest score—songs including such musical gems and now-classic standards as “So in Love,” “Too Darn Hot,” “Why Can’t You Behave?,” and, of course, “Brush Up Your Shakespeare."
Venue: Kiss Me Kate drama performance
Where: TASIS, Palmer Center, Via Collina d'Oro 15, 6926 Montagnola,
Date: Friday April 22nd and Saturday, April 23rd at 19:30
Sunday, April 24th at 14:30

Curing homesickness with Swiss music
Want some yodelling with your fondue? Here you'll find places to stream traditional Swiss music as well as songs from the newest stars of the modern music scene.
The Mx3 music portal bills itself as the intersection of Swiss music professionals, fans, festival organisers, associations and radio stations.
Curious, take a minute to visit the site (http://mx3.ch) and find the latest releases, bands, clubs, and other key points of the Swiss music scene. It works wonders for my homesickness...
Another easily accessible cure to homesickness is the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation. They offer 24/7 pop, classical or jazz music – around a third of which is Swiss: Radio Swiss Pop, Radio Swiss Classic and Radio Swiss Jazz.
Here's my latest favourite Swiss tube: Apostroph's Summernacht

My Top 10 groovy Christmas albums
Christmas just wouldn't be the same without them: I am talking about Christmas Carols. We do sing the classic versions at home but I have always had a penchant for the more groovy sounds of Christmas. Here is my top 10 list of Christmas albums.
Elvis' Christmas Album
Here, the original Elvis' Christmas Album. Part rock, part blues and part distinctively Elvis, some say this is the only album from which fans can still get a glimpse into his early artistic inspiration. Fan favorites: "Blue Christmas", "Santa Bring My Baby Back (To Me)," and "Santa Claus is Back in Town."

Fan favorites: "Blue Christmas", "Santa Bring My Baby Back (To Me)," and "Santa Claus is Back in Town."
Beach Boys, Christmas with the Beach Boys
Sleigh bells are the background instrument of choice in most of the fun-in-the-sun Beach Boys hits—so really, we should have known they'd create a memorable Christmas album, clearly longing for some winter in their world. The most famously broadcast hits from this CD each Christmas are the 1967 single "Little Saint Nick" and "Merry Christmas, Baby."
The Carpenters, Christmas Collection
Although some say the double-disc is exactly what's to be expected from Karen's sweet voice and Richard's "famously light, inoffensive arrangements," it's also noted that these recordings caught the singer's vocals in their prime. Best known hit: "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve."
The Christmas Collection: The Best of Jackson 5
When we think J5, we think joy and novelty, a tornado of energy and little-boy brilliance. The boy-band quintet (young MJ and brothers Jermaine, Jackie, Tito and Marlon) lives up to standards on their Christmas album, too. Get up and groove (with '70s-style moves) to "Up on the Housetop."
Ray Charles, The Spirit of Christmas
Mmmm—soulful and gravelly, just the sound we expect. Ray's only recorded Christmas album, released in 1985, gives you the holiday fuzzies. You can hear him smiling during "Winter Wonderland," a fan favorite, but you'll be smiling during his famous, 1961 duet with Betty Carter, "Baby, It's Cold Outside."
The Christmas Collection: The Best of Stevie Wonder
Stevie's voice bellows young and sweet from these lullaby-like carols originally recorded in 1967. The new collection adds two tracks, but the fan favorites are the same: Swoon over "Someday at Christmas" and "Ave Maria."
Nat King Cole, The Christmas song
To this Christmas album Nat brings a fun and bubbly side best known from non-holiday hit, "It's only a Paper Moon" but also casts a captivating spell, such as he did in "Mona Lisa". Holiday Classic: "The Christmas Song" written by Mel Tormé.
Bing Crosby, White Christmas
Bing's voice is rich and unforgettable. The recordings, most originally completed in the '40s, some in the '30s, are crackly—the arrangements, outdated. But the scratchy changes in pitch are specifically what carries the charm and appeal for Christmas-music lovers now. Best known recording: "White Christmas."
Frank Sinatra, A Jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra
Frank, unlike other artists, leaves untouched the classic Christmas carols he chose for this 1957 release, but does add his characteristically sly touch to two songs: "The Christmas Waltz" and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear."
The Temptations, Give Love at Christmas
Recognized mostly for soulful R&B hits "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," The Temptations similarly shine in Christmas hits "Everything for Christmas," "The Christmas Song" and "Silent Night." Let one of the most inspired bands from the 60s, 70 and 80s ignite happy holiday memories.

Gigi d'Alessio is coming to town
My hubby is Neapolitan so Gigi d'Alessio is a big feature in our household. The 48-year-old Italian singer and songwriter is presenting his tour called "Progetto Malaterra", a project of Gigi D'Alessio and #CampaniaSicura.
In this tour Gigi D’Alessio puts together a show where tradition and innovation merge creating a unique atmosphere. This event will be full of magical moments and unexpected surprises but will also spread the message of the cause that inspired the whole project.
The tracklist will include some of the worldwide renowed hits of the music from Naples. These tunes will also be included in Gigi D’Alessio’s new album, all sung in the traditional Neapolitan language, half of which are written by Gigi himself.
During the event there will be a space dedicated to the food products from Campania and to the efforts needed to fight the reality of “Terra Dei Fuochi” literally “the land of fires” that is affecting the Campania’s economy and life.
In this respect, at every European stop, Gigi D’Alessio will screen the documentary called “Malaterra” in which the artist personally promotes the treasures of Campania through a real and round reportage in his homeland.
Gigi D'Alessio looks back on a 20-year career with more than 20 million albums sold, a diamond and more than 100 platinum albums back. A concert not to be missed if you like Italian music.
Venue: Concerto Gigi d'Alessio
Where: Palazzo dei Congressi, Piazza Indipendenza 4, 6900 LUGANO
Date: Wednesday October 14th, 2015
Time: Door opens at 19:00 Concert starts at 20:30

What does Switzerland sound like?
This question will be answered by Coop in association with the online newspaper 20 min. They are inviting the community to join their music project called "The Sound of Switzerland".
Four musicians - SNOOK from the Grisons, Alejandro Reyes from western Switzerland, Make Plain from Ticino and Anna Känzig from German-speaking Switzerland have been mobilized under the leadership of Roman Camenzind to sing together in all four national languages. They'll get help from all linguistic regions of Switzerland's music scene. As for the chorus, this is where the whole country comes into play: the Swiss population is to form the largest choir in Switzerland ever.
As of 25 September, the population - yes, that would include YOU - is called to sing via the new 20-minute app to chorus of the song or dance, upload the video, thus contributing to the music video of the song.
Be part of this unique project and help break the Swiss language barriers. Sounds like fun to me. Following is the link for the registration (in German) online: http://www.20min.ch/panorama
Deadline is September 27th, 2015.
So klingt die Schweiz - Aufruf from Pixel Love GmbH on Vimeo.

Ticino's top 10 running songs tracks
There is nothing like listening to the right playlist when you need to burn calories. There are more and more Swiss runners (almost 2 million), and many use the streaming service Spotify. That's how Ticino online established the most popular songs in the different cantons. From Bellinzona to Basel from Zurich to Bern, from Chur to Geneva, they explored the Swiss joggers' preferences.
Starting with the Ticino: Bellinzona's runners like hip hop: there are 6 tracks of this kind in the top ten lead by the Black Eyed Peas.
But the music tastes are not the same everywhere: in fact Zurich's joggers like basking in Latin beats which even include merengue and reggaeton.
The more rhythmic are the Bernese with an average frequency of 142 beats per minute (bpm). The Ticinesi average at 131 bpm. In Basel, they are more relaxed with 122 bpm and their playlist says it all, where they go from Lilly Wood & The Prick' Afro-pop to the rock of Florence and the Machine.
Here is Ticino's Top Ten runners playlist 2015:
Shut Up - The Black Eyed Peas (113 bpm)
What Them Girls Like - Ludacris (170pm)
Westside Story - The Game 115 (bpm)
Furious - Ja Rule 94 (bpm)
Skydive - Chuckie 128 (bpm)
Mozart’s House - Clean Bandit 125 (bpm)
Tom Ford - Jay Z 154 (bpm)
Lights On - Wiley 127 (bpm)
Dirt Off Your Shoulder - Jay Z 160 (bpm)
Locked Out Of Heaven - B. Mars 128 (bpm)

Migros' Christmas song 2014: "Ensemble"
I have heard through the grapevine about Migros' Christmas charity song entitled "Ensemble" where 23 well-known Swiss artists, interpret the Christmas song for people in need.
Being typically Swiss the song is sung in the country's three official languages. Well, maybe I should correct that, Swiss German is after all a dialect but it does give it the distinctly Helvetic touch and make me feel right at home again.
The title “Ensemble” also expresses the motto of the Christmas fundraising sponsor of this year, the Swiss supermarket company Migros, “Celebrate together, Give together.” With this song Migros calls on the Swiss population to donate for people in need who live in their country.
For the video production of the song, “Ensemble” Migros has managed to bring together 23 famous Swiss artists, including well-known names of show-business as Noëmi Nadelmann, Pepe Lienhard, Sebalter, Pippo Pollina, Fabienne Louves. Among them is the legendary football coach Gilbert Gress, who in the video has a very special role. The song was composed by Roman Camenzind. For the filming of the video artists met in the magical setting of an Alpine hut. The video with an invitation to participate in the fundraiser will be broadcast for the first time as a television ad on Friday, November 21, 2014.
The amount donated will be distributed equally to four charities in Switzerland: Swiss Winter Relief , Heks, Caritas, and Pro Juventute. The money will be used to finance various projects. The money raised will be donated in equal parts (25%) of the four organizations mentioned. At the end of the collection, Migros will double the amount donated up to a maximum of CHF 1 million in total.
So, be aware and look out for the vouchers worth 5, 10 and 20 francs you can buy as of November 22nd for making donations. Money can also be donated by a payment to the account 30-620742-6 PC, by sending an SMS with the keyword “Migros” to the number 455, by downloading the Christmas song by ExLibris, iTunes or GooglePlay.
Click here and get a sneak première of the song "Ensemble" or learn more about the fundraiser on Mirgos' site: www.migros.ch/natale.

Ever heard of Sinplus?
Ever heard of Sinplus? They are a Swiss duo, made up of brothers Ivan and Gabriel Broggini. Not only are they Swiss but they are Ticino natives from Losone.
The duo was chosen to represent Switzerland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. Now they have come out with a new summer-vibe song. It's a fresh melody and a simple, but powerful message: the best things in life are for free! “Love Is Free” is the new single featuring a very special guest: the Jamaican British singer Lady Chann.
Check out their video, you might even recognise a few places close to home:

Funky Christmas playlist
I looove Christmas carols and will listen to them with gusto for the entire month of December. However, I do sometimes prefer a funkier version of the classic songs. My absolute favourite of all times is Lou Rawls' "Christmas is the time". Very Soul and R&B.
Following is a list which will hopefully inspire you to put together your own jazzy Christmas Carol list.
Happy listening:
Merry Christmas, Baby - Otis Redding
Santa Baby - Eartha Kitt
All I Want For Christmas Is You - Olivia Olson
Silent Night, Holy Night - Frank Sinatra
Little Saint Nick - The Beach Boys
Last Christmas - Wham!
White Christmas - Louis Armstrong
Joy To The World - Aretha Franklin
Santa Claus Is Back In Town - Elvis Presley
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing - Ella Fitzgerald
Christmas Song - Cocoon
Winter Wonderland - Macy Gray
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (Album Version) - Jackson 5
White Chrismas (Part 1) - Pink Martini
Baby It's Cold Outside (feat. Norah Jones) - Willie Nelson featuring Norah Jones
Brighten The Corner Where You Are (24-Bit Digitally Remastered 06) - Ella Fitzgerald
Happy Christmas (War Is Over) (as made famous by John Lennon) - The Christmas Party Singers
Blue Christmas (as made famous by Elvis Presley) - The Merry Christmas Players
Maybe This Christmas - John McDermott/Ron Sexsmith
Winterlude - Bob Dylan
