Apart from Lugano itself, there are other places on the shores of Lake Lugano that are worth seeing. The best way is by ship, visiting one of the attractions of the region or dropping in for lunch in a typical grotto. There’s no better way to relax and enjoy your day.
From 8th April 2017, you can enjoy the new boat tours, for example the Magic Tour with four different stops: Leaving Lugano for the romantic village of Gandria and the Cantine di Gandria with the Museo delle Dogane then to Melide, where you can visit the Swissminiatur, the well-known park of Switzerland in a scale from 1:25 or walk along the lake to Bissone all the way to Morcote. This peaceful lakeshore village was once entirely devoted to fishing and is the winner of the contest for "the most beautiful village in Switzerland".

Join the first Ticino Instameet
Lugano Turismo and other local tourism boards, have the pleasure to invite you to join them for an Instameet in Ticino, Switzerland on September. 4th with world-renowned adventure photographer Chris Burked who will be hosting the meet. This is a great opportunity to encounter the legendary American outdoor photographer and explorer and capture amazing photographs in the sunniest canton of Switzerland.
In a nutshell, an Instameet is where people meet in pre-determined place at a set time, to take photos (sometimes doing a photo walk) then upload them to Instagram.
This instameet will last the whole day: after having assembled in Lugano, you’ll do a photo walk along the lake, visiting the church Santa Maria degli Angioli and the Parco Ciani.
You’ll then take the train to Bellinzona, where you will visit the city centre and the castles, starting from the city hall.
You will then travel by train to Locarno and take the funicular up to the beautiful church Madonna del Sasso, in Orselina. From there you will walk back towards Piazza Grande in Locarno, ending the day with a drink at Kursaal Locarno.
At the end of the day, Chris Burkard will choose 10 winning photos among the ones uploaded during the day.
Everyone is Welcome! If you haven’t pre-registered here, simply come to the meeting points and register on-site (ask for Laura!)
Venue: Instameet Ticino
Date: Sunday, September 4th, 2016
Time: 8.45 AM, in front of LAC Lugano, Piazza Bernardino Luini 6, 6900 Lugano.

1. August Brunch 2016
Switzerland's National holiday is approaching fast.
The 1.August Brunch has become a popular activity on our National Day. For the past 23 years Swiss farmers have been inviting city dwellers (Swiss and foreign alike) for brunch on a farm. Last year over 150'000 guests enjoyed the culinary adventure offered by 350 farms throughout Switzerland of which 51 in Ticino. Through this movement the farmers' families wish to promote a better understanding and sympathy of local agriculture by the city population.
The 1. August Brunch is an occasion that one should not miss. Hosted by selected Swiss farms who offer you a brunch, they will provide you with the opportunity to taste different kinds of cheese, meat, milk, bread, Birchermüesli and many other gastronomic specialities in a very particular atmosphere.
You'll also have the certainty to try some excellent products with high quality standard's. If you're lucky you'll enjoy some typical Swiss music, meet a Swiss celebrity, be served out of a giant Roesti frying pan or admire some amazing National costumes. The kids will love all the direct contact with the farms' animals.
Book now for a brunch in one of the farms! Click here to find a list of Ticino's participating farmers.
For a detailed guide with info such as activities, animals or produce for sale click on the following link: http://www.agriturismo.ch/chi_siamo/brunch_del_1_agosto_2016
My favourite used to be Alpe Durango at the top of Monte Tamaro but sadly they are not participating this year. My friends recommend the two farms on top of Monte Generous.
As places in the farms are limited, registration is mandatory and better done early. You can register by telephoning or e-mailing the farmers directly before July 30th 2016. There are still quite a few spots left as of this morning. Please communicate how many children and adults you'll be.
Venue: 1.August Brunch
When: Monday, August 1st, 2016
Time: 9:00 - 13:00
Price: CHF 25.- to 40.-
Directions: All participating farms will be signposted with the logo: «Brunch»
For more info:

A charming lake hike to beat the heat
Hiking is a Swiss National sport. Here is a suggestion for lovely day's outing through the picturesque Val Piora via a pleasant round hike over the high plateau.
A whole bunch of beautiful mountain lakes, remnants of the last ice age, are scattered throughout the Piora tableland high above Levantine. The largest is the bluish-green Ritom lake, which lies at solely a half-hour’s hike from the mountain station of the amazingly steep funicular railway. A small gravel path leads firstly to the western end of the lake, and then along the northern shore to Cadagno di Fuori.
From there you can reach Alpe di Piora either directly or via a delightful looping trail that runs through the moorland landscape surrounding the Cadagno lake.
The delicious Piora cheese is made on this Alp of the same name and is known to be one of Switzerland’s most refined and sought-after delicacies. From the Cadagno hut the route leads through a small arc to the opposite side of the valley and then slightly upwards via Fontanella to the highest point of the tour, close to the Forca Pass.
Stop for a well-deserved rest around the Ritomsee lake and enjoy the fantastic views from the upper Levantine before you make your way back to the Piora mountain station. The route is about 12km and takes about 4 hours without stopping but trust me you will want to stop time and again to take pictures with your camera or in your mind. It is a truly unforgettable experience and well worth the hike!

One day escape in Lugano
Lugano Tourism is offering some “all-inclusive” programmes at the tourist information offices to help you get the most out of the Ticino region.
The itineraries can be modified to best suit your needs. Starting and finishing points are only suggestive, so you’ll be able to organise your trips depending on your preferences.
Why not adventure on a fascinating excursion from Lugano to Casino? The trip includes a visit to the Fishing Museum as well as to the Chocolate Museum.
You could also take the cableway from Miglieglia to the top of Monte Lema and 10 minutes later, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular view which will accompany you on your hike to Monte Tamaro. From Monte Tamaro, a cableway will take you to Rivera.
Or take a boat trip to Gandria, a romantic fishermen’s village, to visit the small hamlet and have lunch in a typical grotto. You may go back to Lugano either by boat or by taking the Olive Path, a pleasant walk back to town where you can stop for a swim and bask in the sun at Lido S. Domenico.
You don't have to be a tourist to enjoy these outings. Why not plan a fun afternoon with your kids when there are off school?

A family day at the EXPO 2015
The Universal Exhibition in Milano was reason enough for me to take the kids out of school for a day and travel to Italy hoping we'd enjoy an unforgettable experience. It sure was memorable but not entirely as expected.
Having bought the tickets online a year ago, reserved a place in the parking garage, even booked entry vouchers for the Swiss stand, I felt I was ready to face the humongous site showcasing more than 140 participating countries. Each pavilion was asked to present - through some mind-googling technology at times - a concrete answer to a vital need: being able to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the Planet and its equilibrium.
I might be biased but I do feel the Swiss managed to visually and emotional defend their case. They were by the way, the first country to join the Expo Milano 2015.
Its pavilion was made up of four towers, full of local food products which the visitor could take away. But there was a limit to the resources available, to exceed that limit meant depriving other visitors of the same opportunities.
Thanks to the modularity of the structure, the platform on which the towers stand is lowered as they are emptied, allowing everyone to see for themselves their own habits of consumption. The project, which focuses on the availability and distribution of food resources in the world, invites visitors to reflect on their behavior as consumers.
Apart from curing our home-sickness, however, we had to fight the hoards of visitors. It started at the parking house where we queued to find a place, despite the reservation. We were asked to take the shuttle to the main exhibition entrance, walked across some bridges for another 10 minutes, stood patiently though the security check and when the finally the gates opened in front of us (about 50 minutes after having driven onto the site) we felt like we had entered an International Disney Land!
Where to start? Argentina was Expat boys natural answer, he was born there. 50 minutes of queuing for a very disappointing slide show. Spain's slideshow was slightly more entertaining and only 20 minutes of waiting in line. Guess what? Haiti, Venezuela and Kenya had no queues. We skipped Japan's stunning pavilion, apparently 6 hours of patience was required for that visit. No way!
The US contingency which was trying to sell placemats, mugs and t-shirts was very disappointing, especially since their entrance looked to be the grandest one of all. The kids could not even get excited about the food trucks out the back given we were - after all - in Italy!
Qatar's building tempted us with images of 1001 Nights and after standing in line under the pouring rain for 40 minutes the presentation of a typical local feast made out of some sort of plastic did not live up to our expectations.
So, the message about respecting the planet and its food sustainability did get lost in whirlwind of country-hoping. Tourist promotion would be a more adapt term. The crowds were un-imaginable. Picture Heathrow airport at Christmas then imagine it 10 times worse. The day we visited the Expo we were 4 of 178'000 battling our way through the crowds from 12:00 to 21:00! The next day, the event hit a record number of 272'000 visitors!!!!
The best part in the kids opinion was the food! We enjoyed many different regional delicacies and despite the queues for drink and food, once we found a little spot in the sun, we had a smashing time eating our way through the continents!

It's a challenge!
Going with the flow...
Argentina's pavilion looked very promising.
Spanish creativity
Guess what? The auditorium is PiNk!
Casa de Italia: 3 hours of queue. Not happening!
Impressive architecture...
... everywhere you turn.
American Food 2.0 ???
Welcome to Switzerland
It's all about sharing
Quantities are calculated to last for the entire 6 month of the exhibit...
... IF every visitor only helps himself to one portion!?!
The last two cartons of dried apples...
... which are rapidly diminishing!
If I share with my daughter, the portion of apples might last another 52 days.
Sadly, the apples lasted only additional two days!
Switzerland is rich in natural water thanks to its many mountain springs.
Expat girl was inspired by the Swiss pavillon
Hitting the crowds AGAIN!!!
A well kept secret: Haiti!
Qatar from the outside looked much more promising than...
... from the inside!
The French pavilion was a nice surprise: creative and welcoming.
The Dutch had no budget for a pavilion so a backstreet food market was mounted
which totally felt like Little Amsterdam: good job!
The tree of life granted a well deserved break from all the chaos.
We ended the day with a well deserved Neapolitan dessert: la sfogliatella!

Fox Trail in Lugano
Have you heard of Fox Trail, the latest addition to Switzerland's many activities? Fox Trail consists of a thrilling paper chase organised across the country. The ingenious team event leads you to a city's most charming nooks and crannies or even to a castle's bizarre rooms on the Fox' various trails. Every course is different: decipher messages, interpret clues and coax secrets out of intricate puzzles.
Whether friends, family, acquaintances, company or club: Fox Trail makes for a group event that is rich in variety, and suits curious people between 8 and 88 years of age and it always has a new surprise up its sleeve.
It is not a race or an athletic feat, but a fun and elaborate group event, which lets you playfully discover a city with investigative skill, creativity and team work.
Ticino's trail is called Galileo Galilei where you'll search for the mysterious green treasure chest in the centre of Lugano. The trail leads you from the train station directly into the hills of the city but do not let yourself be too distracted by the breath-taking view, as there is still much to do: knights have to be saved, old characters have to be deciphered or trails of blood pursued. Even an exclusive cableway will help you with the enigma! This extraordinary tour through Lugano ends in the city center and is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience.
Seek and book a trail right here: http://www.foxtrail.ch/en. The organisers will tell you all in an e-mail. Happy hunting!

Greetings from Graubünden
Graubünden Tourism is bringing together the most hectic and most peaceful places in Switzerland via an electronic live billboard at Zurich Central Station offering to transport stressed-out city dwellers to the Graubünden village of Vrin.
A very original and personalized video is testimony to an unusual approach in tourism marketing designed to publicize Vrin, a small Swiss village with just 275 inhabitants in the canton of Graubünden.
The protagonist of the advertising is a cheerful local mountain farmer, sitting on a meadow with his laptop which connects to a panel in Zürich's main train station: there he interacts with travellers proposing to come and visit him. Should they accept, he will print and offer them the train fare.
What a brilliant, simple and low cost, but high impact idea. Would you take the day off to catch some fresh mountain air?

An unforgettable hiking experience: Ritom Lake
Still looking for a day's outing to enjoy the views and get some fresh air? The Ritom lake is an absolute must-see if you live in the Ticino.
A whole bunch of beautiful mountain lakes – remnants of the last ice age – are scattered throughout the Piora tableland high above Leventina. The largest of them the bluish-green waters of the Ritom lake, which lies at solely a half-hour’s hike from the mountain station of the amazingly steep funicular railway. Here a small gravel path leads firstly to the western end of the lake, and then along the northern shore to Cadagno di Fuori.
Next in line is the Alpe di Piora, reached from here either directly or via a delightful looping trail that runs through the moorland landscape surrounding the Lago Cadagno lake. The delicious Piora alpine cheese is made on this Alp of the same name - and is known to be one of Switzerland’s most refined and sought-after delicacies. From the Capanna Cadagno hut the route leads through a small arc to the opposite side of the valley and then slightly upwards via Fontanella to the highest point of the tour, close to the Forca Pass. Having had your fill of fantastic views to the depths of the Ritom lake and upper Leventina, you then make your way back to the Piora mountain station.
Here is the map: http://www.myswitzerland.com/en
Starting point: Funicolare Ritom, 6775 Ambrì, Ticino
Destination: Piotta/Piora
Getting to the start: Bus or car to Piotta, then funicular rail to Piora
Technical challenge: easy
Physical challenge: medium
Length: 12 km
Hiking time: 4 hours

A challenging hike on the Gotthard Pass
Looking for a place with a view? Beware, it is also a bit of a challenge.
The ridge path from the Gotthard Pass to the Bedretto valley is outstanding and has wonderful views onto the Tessin mountain world. The panorama ranges from Val Piora to the Cristallina region. The old Gotthardpass road, which winds its way in numerous curves up the Tremola ravine, is also impressive. A perfect getaway for hot, sweltering summer days. the hiking time is about 4 hours, however, it is an experience you won't forget.
The hike begins at Gotthard Pass and leads first of all along the main road, going South. The view into Tremola ravine is most impressive during the stretch along the road gallery. At the end of the gallery there is an ascent to Strade dei Banchi. After Costoni di Fieud, views of Leventina and Val Bedretto become visible. The ridge path leads past the alpine pastures of Pian Secco and Fibbia before it reaches its highest point at the alpine hut Rosso di fuori. The valley of Bedretto with its charming villages lies far below. The descent winds its way via Alpe di Vinei and Alpe di Cavanne down to Ronco.
Technical information
Begin of tour: Gotthard Hospiz bus stop
Access starting point: Journey from Airolo to Gotthard Pass by postal bus
Point of arrival: Ronco bus stop
Access point of arrival: Return trip by bus from Ronco
Hiking time: 4 h
Physical fitness: challenging
