The autumn flavours of Ticino

Ticinese cuisine, which is closely related to that of Lombardy, is, like in all regional gastronomies, the result of a continuous process that lies somewhere between evolution and preservation.

The poor and monotonous food of the last centuries, when the majority of the Ticinese people lived off chestnuts, polenta and potatoes, slowly became richer. New food, flavours and recipes came into the picture with the changing of the times, also thanks to Ticinese immigrants that brought back different culinary ideas from the countries they visited.

At the same time, however, Ticinese cuisine preserved several of its characteristics: the use of genuine products, the simplicity of dishes tied to the rural world and the fondness for tasty flavours. Today it proposes dishes prepared according to the recipes that have been handed down from one generation to another but also the modern re-visitation of traditional recipes.

The following are among some of the most renowned and appreciated Ticinese dishes: minestrone, pumpkin soup and “busecca”, risotto, roasted meats (rabbit, kid), and polenta with Luganighetta sausage or brasato (braised meat), baked, sautéd or marinated fish from the river or lake.

Among drinks, besides local red and white wines, there is fresh and thirst quenching lemonade called gazzosa but also grappa and ratafià (also called nocino), a liqueur made from walnuts of which, they say, only friars know the original recipe.

Open days in Ticino's wine cellars

There is no need to be an expert, just curious! There is no need to spend lots of money, just the right value. You SHOULD however, enjoy yourself and let yourself be carried away by your senses.

Over 40 wineries throughout the Ticino are opening their doors this weekend for you to taste their vineyards' products and visit the wineries.

For some years now, many of Ticino's wine producers have been opening their doors, with justifiable pride, to show visitors the products of their work. Tasting is permitted of the local Merlots as well as innovative combinations and experiments (dessert wines, ancient rediscovered vines and much more).

Accompanied by cheeses, cold meats and music, Ticino's best wines blossom!

The Swiss being true to themselves are terribly organized. Ticinowine, sensitive to ecological issues, have organized a service of circular busses together with RailAway and PostBus, which tour between the various cellars adhering to the event. This service allows the visitors travelling by train and those, who don't want to use their own car, to move without problems between the locations.

For more detailed informaton, click here: www.ticinowine.ch/
For an extensive list of all participating wineries click here: http://ticinoatavola.ch/?p=2921

A little tip: my personal favourite is Osteria Grotto Piccolo Vigneto in Albonago.

Brunch at the Lido of Lugano

“When you wake up in the morning, Pooh," said Piglet at last, "what's the first thing you say to yourself?"
"What's for breakfast?" said Pooh. "What do you say, Piglet?"
"I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting today?" said Piglet.
Pooh nodded thoughtfully. "It's the same thing," he said.”

Spring is definately around the corner! The Lugano Lido is reopening its doors this weekend. The long winter wait is over, soon the lounge chairs will be out again and you'll be able to chill on the sundeck with a stunning view onto the San Salvatore. If you squint your eyes you can imagine yourself in Rio, trust me! In the meantime, enjoy a delicious brunch which offers a variety of regional and Mediterranean dishes.

The Restaurant aL LiDO was founded by four young professionals in the fields of gastronomy, communications and management consultancy, who from an early age had spent their summers here on the beach of the Lido of Lugano.

It was during a winter get-together that they came up with the idea - based on memories of their teenage days at the Lido - to promote one of the most beautiful places in Lugano.

The City Council appreciated their concept and was enthusiastic to let them develop it and so, out of the many applicants, conferred the management of the restaurant to these young men. And so it happened!

Venue: Lugano Lido Brunch
Where: Viale Castagnola 6, 6900 Lugano
When: every Sunday, Breakfast buffet from 11am, lunch buffet (warm and cold and sweet) from noon onwards.
Price: CHF 42.- included warm drinks and water. Special prices for children under 12.

What is the Most Expensive Beer in the World?

From what part of brewing did the term “rule of thumb” originate?
Before the advent of thermometers, brewers tested the temperature of their maturing brews with their thumbs:  too cold, and the yeast wouldn’t grow, too hot, and it would die.

Who was the first American to brew lager type beer?
The first US lager was brewed in 1840 by John Wagner, who had a small brewery in the back of his house on St. John Street in Philadelphia. Wagner brought the first lager yeast to the United States from a brewery in Bavaria.

Full Moon Weekend in Lugano!

“Tell me what you feel in your room when the full moon is shining in upon you and your lamp is dying out, and I will tell you how old you are, and I shall know if you are happy”
Henri Frederic Amiel (Swiss writer known for his masterpiece Journal intime, 1821-1881)

With a bit of luck the sunshine will stay with us this weekend, so we can enjoy a estival escape without leaving Lugano.

aL LiDO, a restaurant, a disco-bar and a beach lounge right on the lakeside, where you can relax, taste a wide range of gastronomic products, sit back on the terrace and enjoy the spectacular view of the Gulf of Lugano. The Lugano Lido believes in an endless summer.

During the month of August they have set up a "Chiringuito", a beach bar where you can wiggle your toes in the sand while sipping at Mojitos, Caipirinhas, Caipiroskas, Fruit smoothies or drinking a simple beer. The lakeside terrace is transformed and becomes the scenery for after work drinks, dinners à la carte and outdoor disco bar with live DJs.

The Chiringuito is open from 18:30 to 01:00 from Thursdays through Saturdays. This weekend's full moon renders Lugano's beach especially romantic.

Chilling out at Lugano's Lanchetta Terrace

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”
Robert Brault

La Lanchetta is a very nice bar and restaurant on the eastern end of Lugano’s lakeshore, just a few meters away from the restaurant aL LiDO. It was renovated in 2003 and now shines in its new modern appearance. You will be attracted by the raw and vibrant space and artwork.

La Lanchetta is particularly appealing during summer time, when they open the whole front wall. You can enjoy your aperitif right on the lake. Sitting on the lake opposite the Hotel Cassarate Lago, this hip, dimly lit bar is perfect for pre-dinner drinks.

If you are looking for a real chill out evening, well,  La Lanchetta is definitely your place. Smooth Jazz and lounge music will be the soundtrack of your night while sipping a delicious glass of Prosecco enjoying the amazing view of the lake.

Thursday nights are reserved for Live Jazz Music and Friday & Saturday promise DJ entertainment.

Check it out with your partner and enjoy a romantic moment à la Luganese. ;)

Lugano's aL LiDO Beach Lounge

“So here’s to all those summer nights when my feet hit the sand and the waves break my fall and all my friends around me out number the stars.”

The Lido di Lugano would be qualified as the one and only true specialty of Lugano! No other place in Lugano can bring you to rejoice the beautiful summers as the Lido.

Upon entrance you are directly attracted to its victorian-style infrastructure and its beach sands. There is one very big swimming pool and a huge place to sit down in the the sun, or in the shade if preferred, and feel the warm Lugano-sun like nowhere else in Switzerland.

aL LiDO is a restaurant, a disco-bar and a beach lounge right on the lakeside where you can relax, taste a wide range of gastronomic products, sit back on the terrace and enjoy the spectacular view of the Gulf of Lugano.

aL LiDO is open from March to December; the gastronomical suggestions and public events follow the seasons, and from the indoor area you will enjoy the beautiful lake view regardless of the outside temperature.

The City Council appreciated their concept and was enthusiastic to let them develop it and so, out of the many applicants, conferred the management of the restaurant and kiosks of the Lido di Lugano to these young men.  And so it happened!

A place like no other: "Alpe Vicania" near Vico Morcote

"In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks."
John Muir - Scottish-born American naturalist (1838 – 1914)

Hidden on the mountaintop it is not easy to find but worth the trip. Locals love spending a Saturday or Sunday lunch at Alpe Vicania after having hiked there to earn their meal.

You can walk from either Carona or Melide (both approx. 1,5 hours) or hike from Pazzallo (3,5hours) and make it a day's outing. If you are not feeling the urge to walk, you can park the car along the cobbled road and just walk the last bit through the forest. There is also a lovely trail leading from Pazzallo to Alpe Vicania for bike riders.

Alpe Vicania's restaurant is located on the side of a hill looking onto a beautiful meadow. Have a seat on the terrace and enjoy the view over the surrounding countryside or sit on the porch of stone and feel like you're in the woods, or enter the dining room with fireplace and feel the warm atmosphere of a rustic and refined ambiance.

Although the surroundings are rustic the menu items are not. The menu is short but full of fresh, local, seasonal items. Just like a lot of good Swiss restaurants the wine list is extensive.

So, next time you are planning your weekend, consider visiting Alpe Vicania.

Ristorante Vicania (http://www.alpe-vicania.ch)

Opening hours: 11.00 - 24.00
